Additional Information about Program
The UMass 4th year Advanced Endoscopy Program comprises of a one year clinical fellowship designed for recent general gastroenterology fellowship graduates interested in pursuing training in ERCP, EUS as well as other advanced endoscopic techniques. The fellow will spend majority of his/her time in dedicated advanced endoscopy suites. UMass performs more than 1100 ERCP and 1300 EUS procedures yearly across outpatient as well as inpatient settings. In addition to management of routine choledocholithiasis, the advanced fellow will have an opportunity to manage complex biliary/pancreatic strictures, choledochoscopy, pancreatoscopy and lithotripsy. The advanced fellow will also learn to use endoscopic ultrasound to stage a variety of gastrointestinal malignancies, perform FNA/FNBs. Therapeutic EUS such cyst-gastrostomy with necrosectomy using lumen-apposing metal stents, EUS guided gallbladder drainage as well as EUS guided gastro-jejunostomy will be part of the training. The fellow will regularly perform EMR, RFA for Barrett's esophagus, cryotherapy, deep enteroscopy and enteric stenting. The program also offers significant exposure to bariatric endoscopy. This includes exposure to ESG, TORe, and management of post-bariatric surgery complications (e.g., sleeve leaks, anastomotic stenoses, and fistula repair). Additionally, UMass is one of few advanced endoscopy programs in the country which has access to an on-campus animal laboratory. Prior advanced fellows have undergone ex-vivo and in-vivo training for endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), POEM and use of new devices and techniques. Finally, UMass is one of the few programs heavily involved in artificial intelligence development and deployment. UMass currently runs a clinical trial focusing on the diagnosis of biliary strictures using an in-house developed AI program.
