Additional Information about Program

Fox Chase Cancer Center has an academic cancer hospital affiliated with Temple Health system in Philadelphia, PA. The Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship (AEF)is housed within the Division of Gastroenterology and is comprised of five full-time faculty, two of whom are therapeutic endoscopists. Dr. David Weinberg served as Division chief until 2023 and is the current Chair of the Department of Medicine as well as Editor-in Chief of the AGA publication Gastroenterology. Dr. David Loren assumed the chief of Gastroenterology position in 2023 and currently serves as the President of the Foundation for Interventional and Therapeutic Endoscopy (FITE). Dr. Loren has over twenty years experience in fellow education as an advanced endoscopy fellowship director and has worked with the ASGE fellowship directors’ committee over that period. The central focus of the gastroenterology division at Fox Chase Cancer center is the Therapeutic Endoscopy Center of Excellence that delivers cutting edge endoscopic care to the Philadelphia region and beyond. Along with Dr. Loren (training at the University of Pennsylvania and AEF at Thomas Jefferson University) is Malorie Simons, MD (fellowship at Johns Hopkins and AEF at Weill Cornell) who together comprise the Fox Chase Therapeutic Endoscopy program. As part of the Temple Health System, there is collaboration with the therapeutic endoscopy program at Temple University Hospital which includes therapeutic endoscopists Nicholas Wilson, MD (fellowship Temple University and Fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center) and Nicholas McDonald, MD (fellowship University of Minnesota and AEF Thomas Jefferson University). Research and clinical collaboration throughout the system allows for synergy of the programs through the shared electronic medical record and delivery of subspecialty care.

The breadth of procedures performed at the Fox Chase Cancer Centers includes diagnostic and therapeutic EUS, therapeutic ERCP, interventional EUS (endoscopic gastrojejunostomy, endoscopic entero-enterostomy/colo-enterostomy, endoscopic gallbladder drainage), photodynamic therapy, radiofrequency ablation, cryoablation, altered anatomy ERCP, endoscopic mucosal resection, endoscopic submucosal dissection, per-oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM, G-POEM, Z-POEM), submucosal tunneling with endoscopic resection (STER), enteral stenting, endoscopic suturing. The advanced endoscopy fellow has the opportunity to train in all techniques under physicians who are expert in their field. The physicians at Fox Chase Cancer Center have a unique structured focus on education that assures that a fellow gain the requisite knowledge and skills to become a leader in therapeutic and interventional endoscopy.
