Additional Information about Program
In the past 10 years, the USC Advanced Endoscopy program has emerged as leader in the western United States.
Therefore, the teaching environment and opportunities are the optimal setting to train Advanced Endoscopists. As less invasive endoscopic treatments for achalasia, GERD, pancreatitis, ductal stones, and early esophageal cancer to name a few have emerged the need to train endoscopists with the skills necessary to treat these problems is paramount.
At the University of Southern California Advanced Endoscopy Fellows have the unique opportunity to train in three geographically contiguous hospitals (Keck Medical Center of USC, Norris Cancer Center of USC, and the Los Angeles County Hospital) with diverse patient populations and procedural experiences.
Fellows will be trained intensively in complex ERCP (pancreatic and intraductal therapy), diagnostic and therapeutic EUS), double balloon enteroscopy, lower and upper endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), and Barrett's endotherapy. They will have substantive opportunity to perform gastric, esopahgeal and colonic endosocpic submucosal dissection (ESD) and per-oral myotomy (POEM). Additionally, they will engage in endoscopy based multicenter and single center randomized controlled trials, innovative prospective studies, meta-analyses, and projects developing cutting edge technology.
Faculty(specific interests) incluce Jacques Van Dam MD PhD (complex EUS, spectroscopy), Ara Sahakian MD (POEM, ESD, EMR, Bariatrics), James Buxbaum MD, MS (complex/intraductal ERCP, contrast EUS), and Bruce Zweiban MD (complex stone management). A new faculty recruit starting in July 2024 bring additional Bariatrics experience and depth to the program.
