Additional Information about Program

The Center for Advanced Endoscopy at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is one of the largest referral practices for endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) in the nation. Our Harvard Medical faculty lead a rigorous clinical training program in therapeutic endoscopy, while providing a core curriculum of didactic lectures alongside adjunctive ex-vivo training opportunities for our advanced endoscopy trainees. A central focus of the fellowship training program is pancreaticobiliary endoscopy, and there is particularly broad exposure to EUS and ERCP, ranging from standard techniques to advanced therapeutic interventions. EUS/ERCP training includes comprehensive experience with:
• Normal and altered-anatomy ERCP
• Cholangioscopy, pancreatoscopy, and lithotripsy
• Pancreatic necrosectomy/pseudocyst drainage
• EUS-guided biliary access and EDGE techniques
• Fiducial insertion
• EUS liver biopsy
• Luminal cancer staging

Advanced endoscopy fellows also receive extensive experience in management of advanced colon polyps, Barrett's esophagus, and in the evaluation and management of a wide variety of gastrointestinal cancers and achalasia. Procedural training includes:
• Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR)
• Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD)
• Luminal stenting
• Radiofrequency ablation
• Cryotherapy
• Pneumatic and Esoflip dilation
• Esophageal and gastric per-oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM)

Most advanced endoscopy fellows complete one year of training, although some elect to pursue additional time for further clinical training or research. BIDMC advanced endoscopy graduates have joined staff at leading institutions around the world, including University of Texas, University of Vancouver, Massachusetts General Hospital, University of Pittsburgh, University of Toronto, McGill University, King Faisal Specialist Hospital, Sorbonne Université, and Mater Misericordiae Hospital, among many others.
