Additional Information about Program

The Interventional Endoscopy faculty at UCLA Medical Center is committed to providing a comprehensive training experience in advanced endoscopic techniques to motivated individuals interested in pursuing an academic career. Currently, the trainee will work with 5 faculty in the Division (Drs. Muthusamy, Sedarat, Kim, Thaker, and Issa) and will have the opportunity to work at 2 sites: UCLA Westwood and UCLA Santa Monica Medical Centers. The program consists of a structured one-year third tier fellowship program during which the trainee will gain hands-on experience in a broad range of advanced techniques including: therapeutic ERCP including cholangioscopy and pancreatoscopy, diagnostic EUS, interventional EUS, endoscopic mucosal resection, luminal stenting, pseudocyst drainage, radiofrequency ablation, cryotherapy, device-assisted enteroscopy, peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM), and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). The advanced endoscopy fellow typically performs 1300 to 1500 procedures during the year. In addition, structured research meetings and multidisciplinary conferences are scheduled routinely and range from weekly to monthly.

In addition to the cognitive and technical education necessary to provide top-level clinical care in interventional endoscopy, fellows will be provided with research mentoring and will be expected to conduct novel, meaningful research during the fellowship year with presentation of their findings at national meetings with eventual publication in peer-reviewed journals. Ample opportunity exists for collaboration with departments outside of the interventional endoscopy service and with colleagues at other institutions.
