Additional Information about Program

The interventional endoscopy fellowship (IEF) at UAMS would provide structured education and training in various aspects of interventional diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. The duration of the fellowship is one year (starting in July and ending in June). Eligible candidates will have successfully completed a 3-year ACGME-accredited gastroenterology (GI) fellowship in the USA or an equivalent training in an international program (with eligibility to work in the US).

The principal teaching method is case-based and/or procedure-based discussions. A majority of teaching will involve direct instruction in the performance of endoscopic procedures under supervision of attending physicians. Trainees will independently evaluate patients and gather the appropriate clinical data and then present and discuss the case with the attending physician. After discussion, a specific clinical care plan will be formulated for the patients.

The goal of the IEF is to teach the requisite cognitive and technical aspects of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy and to provide sub-specialized advanced endoscopic training and education to gastroenterologists. The primary focus of this fellowship is mentored training in interventional endoscopic procedures related to the hepato-biliary tract. Research is a critical component of the interventional endoscopy training program and the fellow is expected to actively participate in in ongoing research and clinical trials.
